About the Book

I came from a well-to-do family. I lived in a beachfront house with a swimming-pool, sauna and all the amenities of an affluent life. I studied in the best private schools money can afford. I vacationed abroad, owned boats, cars and motorcycles, and was a member of a yacht club. Then, all of a sudden, I found myself homeless and alone in a foreign country hoping my living nightmare would end soon.

Sailing Against the Wind is an approximately 99,000-word memoir detailing my circuitous adventurous travels over land and sea from South America to Europe on the way to the United States. After enduring countless vicissitudes, including episodes of homelessness, financial scarcity, debilitating sea sickness, sailing the North Atlantic and facing the threat of piracy in high sea, among many other trying situations, I ended up in Hawai’i where I lived for 10 years before becoming an American citizen. Once settled in my new homeland, I, through my own individual efforts, put myself to graduate school and became another valuable thread in the fabric of the American society.

Organized into two parts, the first intermingles the troubling circumstances of my privileged life in my country of birth with the challenging experiences of the European leg of my journey to America. The second part recounts the manifold trials and travails I faced after arriving in New York, going to Los Angeles without knowing anyone or resources to sustain me, then moving to Hawai’i where I rebuilt my life in my new adopted motherland. Then, with a family in tow, the journey continues on with my returning to the mainland (New Mexico and Oregon) when I was compelled to  apply all the experiences of my solo travels in the same adventurous way I did alone—and succeeded once again.

Sailing Against the Wind is an inspirational story of an atypical American immigrant whose commitment to never quitting culminated with success. With several serendipitous encounters guiding me in quasi-supernatural fashion, the story of my long journey to America is a testimony to unwavering determination, unbridled faith, resolute courage—and utter despair.
